  • What will you remember most about your Geography education at UK? The people! The Geography department is home to a world-class community of scholars tackling some of our most urgent social and environmental challenges. One couldn't ask for a more rigorous and thoughtful group of folks to read, write, and think with.

 MYUNG IN JI, Ph.D.

  • Ph.D. Geography
  • Dissertation title: Becoming Gentrifier/d: Aesthetics, Subjectivities, and Rhythms of Gentrification in Seoul, South Korea
  • Committee members: Ehrkamp; Lyon; Schein (Chair); Wood
  • What will you remember most about your Geography education at UK? Lacan and Deleuze? If I was not part of this department, I wouldn't think about using their theories. But, studying in Kentucky taught me how to play with those philosophers on the ground. If I answer this question moving beyond "education," I will remember my 2014 cohorts, horties, the most. In my hardiest first 2 years in the US (a foreign country!), their existence itself was really comforting. I emotionally counted on them a lot.

 LAÇIN TUTALAR, Ph.D.

  • Ph.D. Geography
  • Dissertation title: Street Musicians, Soundscapes and Hearing the State in Urban Public Spaces of Istanbul
  • Committee members: Ehrkamp; Ilahiane; Secor (Chair); Schein
  • What will you remember most about your Geography education at UK? How easy it was to get oneself in the immediacy of collective work, like at the time of the Crit Mini. I am also taking with me the sense of the super-chill wind between POT and the Miller Hall. It is amazing how we were spread on three different floors and kept a center still.
