Hitnes Mural Showcases Beauty of Science Studied at UK EREC

Home to laboratories, aviaries, research fields and ponds, the UK Ecological Research and Education Center (EREC) is also now home to life-size art that illustrates the beauty of the science studied there. Painted by Italian muralist Hitnes and a group of community members and UK students, the mural merges art and science to reflect birds Hitnes observed while he retraced the journey of John James Audubon.

Title: Colorings of Hamming Graphs


Abstract: Error-correcting codes based on Hamming distance are a central topic of study in coding theory. Recent papers have used graphical representations of these codes (called Hamming Graphs) to allow their authors to reprove important coding theory results using tools from graph theory. A classical result exists which classifies all minimal colorings of a certain family of Hamming graphs. I will present original research proving an analogue of this result which applies to a larger class of Hamming graphs. 


No prior knowledge of coding theory (and only a rudimentary understanding of graph theory) is assumed.

Connecting the Dot Factors

The standard conceptual model for pedology, soil geomorphology, and soil geography is often called the “clorpt” model, for the way it was portrayed in Hans Jenny’s famous 1941 book The Factors of Soil Formation:

S = f(cl, o, r, p, t) . . . .

This equation states that soil types or soil properties (S) are a function of climate (cl), biotic effects (o for organisms), topography (r for relief), parent material (p), and t for time, conceived as the age of the surface the soils are formed on, or the time period the soil has been developing under a given broad set of environmental controls. This factorial approach, considering soils as a function of the combined, interacting influences of environmental factors such as geology, climate, and biota, was originated by V.V. Dokuchaev in Russia in the 1880s, popularized in English by C.F. Marbut in the 1920s and 1930s, and developed by Jenny into the familiar clorpt form.

Halloween Spectacular Event!!

Come join the peer mentors in an early celebration of Halloween on Wednesday, October 28, on the 4th floor from 6-7:30 pm. There will be cookie decorating, Halloween games such as Bingo and Dr. Feel-Stein and a costume contest. There will be prizes for the bingo and costume contest winners! We'd love to see you in your costumes, but this is not required. 

This will count as a Wired event!!

Voted a Top 10 Halloween destination by USA Today, zombies will return to haunt downtown Lexington once again!

The evening will kick-off at 6:30 p.m. with a dance showcase, fall foods and Halloween festivities at the Robert F. Stephens Courthouse Plaza. 

Prior to the Thriller dance, will be a Halloween parade featuring ghosts, ghouls, superheroes, villains and costumed characters of all kinds.

This year marks the 14th anniversary of the annual live performance of Michael Jackson’s groundbreaking video for Thriller. The Thriller dance will start at Quality and Main streets and proceed along Main Street ending at Mill Street. The dance will occur repeatedly along the route.

In the event of inclement weather, this event will take place on Monday, October 26, at the same time.
